This workshop builds upon the outcomes of the Webinar on hydrology in Africa which took place on 24 August 2023 and aims to further advance discussions and collaborations initiated during that webinar. It seeks to provide a platform for Earth observation data providers and African institutions to engage, cooperate, and jointly develop strategies for enhancing the utilisation of Earth observation products for hydrological applications in Africa.
The workshop will consider the ongoing activities within the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security in Africa (GMES & Africa) and the Climate services in the African, Caribbean and Pacific regions (ClimSA) programmes, as well as the World Meteorological Organization. It also contributes to the EU-Africa cooperation on space and to the Integrated African Strategy on Meteorology, with a focus on water services.
In addition, this workshop will identify cooperation opportunities that might include capacity building, scientific collaboration, knowledge transfer, and calibration and validation activities.
The event is expected to result in:
- an initial draft of a comprehensive joint roadmap outlining specific actions for enhancing the use of Earth observation products for hydrology in Africa,
- consolidated user needs (including EUMETSAT data provision), providing valuable insights for data providers and policy makers,
- enhanced collaboration and engagement between African institutions and European data providers,
- the identification of capacity-building opportunities and partnerships with training institutions in Africa,
- a recognised link with ongoing Europe-Africa space cooperation initiatives, in particular the alignment with GMES & Africa and the ClimSA programme.
Representatives from the main river basin authorities in Africa, as well as national hydrological servies and research institution will participate.
The workshop is available upon invitation only.
