The CGMS meets regularly each year. EUMETSAT is the permanent secretariat of the CGMS and is therefore responsible for securing the annual plenary session, following up on plenary actions, guiding the CGMS between plenary sessions, guiding the CGMS working groups, and its general management and administration. The CGMS is made up of institutional operational and research and development space agency members from around the world, making up the space-based observational backbone in response to two main user organisations - the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC/UNESCO).
The 52nd CGMS plenary meeting is hosted by the USA National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and will take place in Washington D.C. on 4 – 6 June 2024.
During the plenary meeting, CGMS space agency members will report on their new developments and long-term plans. This will be followed by detailed presentations from each of its five working groups on the results of work in such fields as frequency coordination, collision avoidance and space debris mitigation, the status of data and products from space-based observations including climate and greenhouse gas monitoring, the use of satellite data in artificial intelligence / machine learning models, securing long term observational continuity and support to users, including training.
In order to frame CGMS in the medium-term, the plenary will agree on a high-level statement on the space-based architecture (backbone) in response to the WMO Integrated Global Observing System (WIGOS) Vision 2040.
The meeting is open to CGMS members, observers and on invitation only. More information can be found here.
