At the same time, we are taking steps to offset a portion of the carbon dioxide footprint associated with putting satellites in space and operating them, by supporting Treedom, a global tree-planting initiative.

When the Meteosat Third Generation satellite, Meteosat-12, was launched in December 2022, we funded the planting and care of 754 trees across Kenya, Tanzania, Madagascar, Cameroon, and Ghana.

Since then, we have continued to support this tree-planting project at key milestones in the journey to make Meteosat-12 fully operational. To date, over 2,750 trees have been planted, which Treedom have estimated will absorb 800.05 t of carbon dioxide over their lifetime.

With every new satellite launch, we will continue to expand our commitment to sustainability by adding more trees and the EUMETSAT forest will continue to grow.

We are offering these trees to our teams, whose expertise and efforts are the foundation of the success of the Meteosat Third Generation and Metop Second Generation satellites.
