The LI MAG meeting #15 was devoted to:

  • Communicating to the LI MAG members the status of the MTG programme and of the MTG LI Commissioning.
  • Reporting on the status of the development of tools for monitoring LI Level 0 and Level 1b data. In addition, present to the forum the use of the tools for the analyses of the first LI Level 0 data.
  • Discuss the role of the LI MAG in support of the LI Commissioning.
  • Discuss relevant activities in the context of lightning science and lightning data visualisation.

Objectives and outcomes

1. Communicating to the LI MAG members the status of the MTG programme and of the MTG LI Commissioning.
The objective was accomplished by having key people from ESA and EUMETSAT presenting the status of the MTG programme, ground segment procurement, and MTG-I1 (both FCI and LI) Commissioning.

2. Reporting on the status of the development of tools for monitoring LI Level 0 and Level 1b data. In addition, present to the forum the use of the tools for the analyses of the first LI Level 0 data.
The objective was accomplished by having the LI Science Team reporting on the status of the activities aimed at achieving the end-to-end integration between the LI STAtistical and Reporting (LI-STAR) tool and the MTG Ground Segment Processing Facilities. Such presentations were complemented with a description of the results derived from the analysis of the first LI Level 0 data by means of LI-STAR.

3. Discuss the role of the LI MAG in support of the LI Commissioning.
The objective was accomplished by having a presentation on the status of the preparation of the LI MAG to support the LI Commissioning. In addition, details about the exchange of information between EUMETSAT and LI MAG members, reporting approach and policy of LI data sharing were discussed.

4. Discuss relevant activities in the context of lightning science and lightning data visualisation.
The objective was accomplished by several experts presenting their recent work devoted to the following topic: i) reprocessing of GLM data, ii) simulations of propagation of light from lightning within different cloud systems, iii) analysis of lightning detection from space in coincidence of ground-based measurements of strikes on wind turbines and iv) lightning data visualisation also in combination with products for cloud characterisation. All these presentations were relevant for one key topic in the context of LI mission: lightning performance assessment and optimisation.
