This week’s image of the week is of the recent volcanic eruption from the Sundhnúkur crater row, in Iceland.

Sundhnukur is a volcanic hill with an associated crater row, which is an area of the Earth’s crust prone to localised volcanic activity.

In the image, a plume of smoke and ash can be seen in what is one of the largest eruptions of lava since the recent volcanic activity started at the site in autumn 2023. The lava field from the eruption is estimated to cover an area of 15km2
