This week’s image of the week is of Storm Ashley which brought strong winds, heavy rain and flooding to Ireland and northern UK during the weekend of 19-20 October 2024.

Storm Ashley was a deep area of low pressure that moved towards the UK and Ireland from the Atlantic, bringing storm force winds and causing travel and power disruption.

In Europe, the UK, Ireland and the Netherlands work together as the western storm naming group and storm names are compiled jointly between Met Éireann, the Met Office and KNMI.

This image was captured by the FCI instrument on EUMETSAT’s Meteosat Third Generation satellite (MTG) on 20 October 2024.

The Meteosat weather satellites provide imagery for the early detection of fast-developing severe weather, weather forecasting and climate monitoring.
