A wetland is an area where the land is saturated or covered by water - either seasonally or permanently. World Wetlands Day marks the anniversary of the Convention on Wetlands, which was adopted as an international treaty in 1971.

Lake Chad, in west-central Africa, is a vast area of fresh water located in the middle of sand dunes that covers territories in 4 countries: Nigeria, Cameroon, Niger and Chad.

It is an important wetland area providing food and water to millions of people and supporting unique ecosystems and biodiversity.
