This week’s image of the week is of large areas of smoke from the many fires that are affecting the Amazon rainforest in Brazil.

The Amazon is experiencing record-breaking numbers of fires in 2024, exacerbated by dry conditions linked to climate change and El Nino. 

The Amazon rainforest is the world’s largest rainforest and plays a key role in regulating the Earth’s climate by absorbing carbon dioxide. It is also an irreplacable biodiversity hotspot and the region is home to millions of people.

This image was captured by the OLCI instrument onboard Sentinel-3 on 31 August 2024.

EUMETSAT operates the Copernicus Sentinel-3 satellites, in cooperation with ESA, and delivers the marine and atmospheric data on behalf of the European Union.
