EUMETSAT streamlines its data and service policy to make more data free of charge
As it prepares for opening advanced web services in the near future, EUMETSAT has revised its data policy to facilitate online access to its data and products based on simplified licencing conditions, and to offer more data free of charge or at a lower price.

The changes will be implemented from 15 January 2019 and reflect EUMETSAT’s commitment to the “Oslo Declaration” adopted by the Directors of European National Meteorological Services. Under this declaration, EUMETSAT agreed to regularly review its data policy to make more data available free of charge and to provide more information per unit price, as advances in technology and science increase the amount of information available from its satellites.
Most of the changes relate to the licensing conditions for full-resolution imagery from EUMETSAT’s geostationary Meteosat satellites.
Hourly EUMETSAT imagery data will no longer be subject to licensing, and full-resolution imagery at 15 minutes intervals will become available free of charge, three hours after sensing. For data services for which a licence is required, the process has been streamlined and costs to users reduced.
“EUMETSAT is committed to making its data available as widely as possible, while protecting the value of membership of the organisation and safeguarding its identity,” EUMETSAT Director of Administration Silva Castañer said. “The new policy offers a larger pool of full-resolution Meteosat imagery data free of charge, which EUMETSAT will soon make available online using cloud technology.”
