They will support EUMETSAT and the European Space Agency (ESA) in validating the products which will be developed from the observational data gathered by the Sentinel-3 marine mission, in order to meet the requirements of the oceanography user community.

The meeting was conducted as part of the cooperation agreed between EUMETSAT and ESA under the European Union’s Copernicus programme, which monitors the Earth’s climate, oceans, land and atmosphere. Sentinel-3 will be the first dedicated Copernicus satellite to be operated by EUMETSAT under an agreement signed between EUMETSAT and the European Union on 7 November 2014

The main objective of the Sentinel-3 mission is to measure sea surface temperature, ocean colour, altimetry and land surfaces with high accuracy and reliability. The Validation Team’s four sub-groups each focus on one of these aspects of the mission. In so doing, they discussed the use of in-situ measurements to calibrate Sentinel-3 data in the early stage of the satellite’s operation, the scientific validation of the data processing chain, and how to make the resulting data products easily accessible to users.

The findings of the meeting will help to improve the data processing activities implemented at EUMETSAT as part of the Sentinel-3 marine mission operations run by the organisation.
